Perennial Sowthistle Description Video
| Jeffrey Pettingill explains that the Sowthistle itself is like a lot of the other plants in the Aster Family. He brings a beautiful little yellow flower close to the camera and notes that the plant grows to about 3 and 1/2 to 4 feet high. He notes that it does not get really thick like the Canada Thistle in the background. This is just a plant here and there, but if you look on the ground you can see that there are rosettes everywhere. These will be next year's plants and plants to come in the future. He points to a plant and indicates that it is all connected to other plants by a root from a mother plant. These root stalks are called rhizomes. Whenever the root gets close to the top of the soil and the temperature is right it will send up a new shoot. Jeffrey pulls up a couple of plants to demonstrate how two plants can share the same root and notes that 60 to 80 per cent of the plant can be underground.
