Recreational Impacts Video

Roger Batt and Bryan Dallolio are standing near the parking lot of the Lower Hulls Gulch recreation area of the Boise Foothills. As the camera pans across a trail sign, Roger notes that there are hikers, bikers, joggers, people walking their dogs and people parking just to look at the area. A lot of these people may not know that there are a variety of noxious weeds in this area. A bicycle rider goes by and our crew is walking along the trail and parking lot as Roger states that he is troubled by this, especially when one of the plants is Poison Hemlock. A child that does not know what this plant is may break the stem open and get some of the poisonous alkaloid on their hands. Roger asks Bryan to comment on this concern. Bryan says that people should never put any plant that they don't know everything there is to know about it, in their mouths. Everybody should be cautious about plants that you cannot identify. A lot of plants have caustic saps or poisonous juices. He notes that in the case of Poison Hemlock everything in it including the root contains toxic alkaloids.
